PRESS: Railway council to mull switch to tapered bearing units ‘21

MOSCOW, Feb 25 (PRIME) -- The Council for Railway Transport, uniting the railways of countries with a 1,520 gauge, will discuss a proposal of the Georgian Railway to order Russian companies to install tapered bearing units instead of the current roller bearing units from 2021, business daily Kommersant reported on Tuesday, citing sources.

A meeting of a workgroup of the council was scheduled for Thursday.

The council of the railway transport of the CIS states suggested a switch of all Russian cargo rail cars from rolling bearings to tapered roller bearings in October 2019, and the Transport Ministry issued the order. Several Russian railway operators opposed the idea and sent an open letter to the authorities asking them to cancel the order and saying that the companies may even re-register in other countries in order to avoid compliance.
